St Andrews Cathedral ruins

Description

St Andrews Cathedral, Scotland, the remnants of what was once once the largest cathedral in Scotland.

The Tower to the right, St Rules' tower, is 12th century. The cathedral was also built around this time but its construction was not completed till the 1300s thanks to part of it blowing down in a storm.

It was abandoned in the 16th century after the reformation in Scotland, and left to go to ruin.

I used to go on holiday to this place every Summer as a child and considered it a kind of paradise, in that easily-pleased child manner. St Andrews is, like many towns on the Fife coast, a pretty coastal town with some pleasant beaches, though its ruins- the cathedral, but also a castle on the shore, do give it a unique atmosphere.
